The Penn State Sex Scandal - Penn State Child Abuse Scandal

Posted by Patrick Lundgren on Fri, Nov 11, 2011 @ 03:22 PM

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Never has than phrase been truer than in this case.  The Penn State child abuse sex scandal will go down in history as one of the biggest sports-related scandals in the history of this country.

The most mind-numbing thing about the entire fiasco is the level of blind support for Joe Pa, the coach at Penn State, by the student body.  It is no secret to the rest of the country how important football is to the middle american states, but people from the coasts never truly understand the emotional connection southerners have to football and its leaders, till this case.  The men involved showed negligence, and allowed young children to be taken advantage of, right in the open.  It is that simple.  The worst part is the arrogance of the perpretator and the way he went about it, right into the open.  I don't have the stomach to write out all the details, but if you'd like to read it, you may go to this page at Deadspin.

I believe that all parties involved should be held responsible to the fullest extent of the law, everyone from the culrpit Jerry Sandusky, to the Athletic Director Tim Curley, the president of the university Graham Spanier, Joe Paterno (Jo Pa) the coach, and the original eye-witness, Mike McQueary.  All these men were in a position of power, and with power, comes responsibility.  They chose to turn a blind eye, and in return, should be punished accordingly.

The most convenient part about this whole thing is that all the details surfaced only one week after Joe Paterno notched the title of winningest coach in the history of football.  Very convenient indeed.

Founding of the Marine Corps and Veterans Day

Posted by Patrick Lundgren on Thu, Nov 10, 2011 @ 02:19 PM

The marines were founded on November 10th, and November 11th is Veterans day in 2011.

marines

HISTORIC BACKGROUND BEHIND FOUNDING OF MARINES

During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.  A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.  The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines

 Veterans Day

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND BEHIND VETERAN’S DAY (originally called ARMISTICS DAY)

Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans, past and present.   It is considered a national holiday, and is one of the national federal holidays 2011.

The U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."[2]

The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that the President Calvin Coolidge issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies.[2] An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

No matter what your political affiliation or stance on wars that we’ve been in (or wars in general), we believe that the men and women that serve this country in the armed forces deserve nothing but our unwavering admiration and the utmost respect.  These individual men and women have dedicated their lives to protect us and our families.  They do this every day without hesitation, or concern for their own safety, to protect and uphold the United States of America and all her ideals.

Let’s all take some time this week to tip our caps and honor those that serve our country.

Is Justin Bieber really a dad?!

Posted by Patrick Lundren on Mon, Nov 07, 2011 @ 05:26 PM

Even though we are a moving company, we can’t help but get caught up in the juicy gossip surrounding this teenage pop-star.  Many of our employees who have kids who are fans of his, so unfortunately, the juicy details are all too familiar to us all.

Justin Bieber paternity baby Star magazine

So the latest is that Justin Bieber has agreed to undergo a DNA test.  Our office is torn, some believe he is the dad, others think that there is no way.  I fit into the latter category, because the way I see it, people might lie, but DNA doesn't.

DNA paternity testing became available in 1988. Before that fatherhood was more suggested than proven using blood types (paternity could be excluded but not proven). It got a little more accurate in the '70s and '80s with electrophoresis, which could identify certain genetic markers, but not down to the letter like DNA testing can today.

If the paternity suit is bogus, here's why Mariah Yeater is not, perhaps, the sharpest tool in the shed (besides that fact that she will have instigated her own statutory rape investigation).  Here is some information we gathered from Gizmodo regarding paternity tests, which is actually very interesting information:

Justin Bieber DNA Test

 1. Pay for it

Mail order home tests cost as little as $79, others can cost between $400 and $2000, depending on how complicated the test is (Are you testing one or more kids? Are you also testing for maternity? How fast do you need it?). There's some controversy over whether the home tests are as good as the in-person ones. We suggest you make certain the test is submissible in court if that's what you need.

 2. Get it

Paternity tests these days typically use a simple swab from inside the cheek of the potential family members: daddy, mommy, baby. Spit contains plenty of DNA, since a full complement of your genetic info is present in every cell in your body. Or they might sometimes use blood. You can go to a lab or mail-order your test—more on that below. If you're in more of a hurry, you can test for paternity after the first trimester of pregnancy with amniocentesis or a technique called chorionic villus sampling.

 3. Got it

Each parent contributes half the DNA—23 chromosomes each—to their offspring's genetic make up. DNA is made of the nucleic acids adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine represented by the letters A, T, C and G. They travel in pairs (A binds with T and C binds with G), and together they create that double helix swirl you see in the media pretty much any time DNA is discussed.

 4. Read it

Scientists read the story these letter tell using technology such as a polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, which amplifies the DNA into an amount they can more easily examine. First they identify the mother's DNA and exclude that from the reading, which is easy because only women have mitochondrial DNA, A.K.A mtDNA. The father's contribution is what's left, but they don't study his entire genome. That would take too long and be way expensive. Instead, scientists choose DNA markers, usually around 16 of them, then compare those markers to the baby's DNA.

 5. Keep track of it

To prevent test-tube mix-ups, technicians split the DNA sample in two and check each one against the other throughout the analysis process.

 6. Confirm it

DNA paternity tests are very accurate (about 99.9 percent). They're so accurate that they can even determine paternity by testing DNA from grandparents and cousins, and even using saliva left on a drinking glass.

Not all tests are created equal, at least in the eyes of the law. Some are court-approved while others, often the at-home, mail-in kind, are mostly used for peace of mind—or when deciding to move forward with a lawsuit. We're guessing Biebs et. al. will be springing for the former.

Steve Jobs

Pay homage to arguably the greatest entrepreneur of all time by dressing up like him.  All it takes is a black turtle neck, jeans, and some cheap glasses that you can pick up at your local CVS or Walgreens pharmacy.  Oh, and when you are answering the door, you can hand-out actual Macintosh apples!

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR POTENTIAL MOVERS

Posted by Patrick Lundgren on Fri, Oct 14, 2011 @ 03:13 PM

Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?  Can you send me a certificate of insurance?

If the company you are calling is not a reputable and honest company, they will have trouble answering these questions or providing the documents.  They might even try to change the topic.  A reliable moving company should be able to provide these answers and documents at a moment’s notice!

What is your hourly rate?

Some moving companies have all sorts of hidden rates that they don’t disclose up front on the initial few conversations.  Brookline Moving Company pricing structure is transparent, and simple.  We charge at an hourly rate of time-start, to time-finish, plus an hour for mileage and truck charges.  This way we can provide the most accurate moving estimate possible.

pricing_how_much_does_it_cost

Can you provide some testimonials from previous customers?

Check the company’s rating on sites such as Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List, Service Magic, Google, Yahoo etc, and you should get a good feel for what people are saying about them.

Testimonials

What are my insurance options?

There is an insurance option that is included with your move, though it’s not very high.  A good moving company should be able to give you a detailed explanation about your options.  For more details regarding this, read our blog post about movers insurance options.

Can you provide a binding quote?

If a moving company is not forthcoming with their rates, they will possibly have a nervous breakdown when asked for a binding quote.  A binding quote guarantees that your moving cost will not exceed the number quotes to you, and will give you peace of mind and reduce stress.

PACKING TIPS - HOW TO PACK BEFORE MOVE

Posted by Patrick Lundgren on Tue, Oct 04, 2011 @ 03:09 PM

Packing can be pretty overwhelming task – you have to somehow manage to condense all your belongings in boxes and not damage any of them.  It may seem straightforward to some, but planning ahead and approaching the task properly can save a lot of time, effort, and perhaps most importantly, money! (cha ching)

START EARLY

You should start packing, or at least planning your packing weeks in advance so that you don’t create stress by scrambling at the last minute.  Start with one room at a time, and while you’re at it, get rid of old items by practicing some dejunkification!

PICK THE RIGHT CONTAINER

Books and other heavy items such as canned items and records should be packed in smaller boxes so that they don’t get too heavy.  Dishes and cutlery have their own dedicated boxes as well, as does clothing – use wardrobe boxes to hang your clothes so they don’t get damaged or wrinkled.  Mattresses and box springs have special covers that keep them from getting stained or damaged, as do pictures, paintings and mirrors.  If you need help, contact your local reliable mover for tips on how to pick the right mover and to purchase packing materials that fit the bill.

types of boxes

MAKE THEM STACKABLE

A classic mistake that we see people who pack themselves often make is this, they leave air space in boxes which leaves them vulnerable to being crushed!  The key to good packing is to ensure that the boxes are stackable and that they don’t have any give whatsoever, so that when you move and stack them, they maintain their structural integrity.  If you feel uneasy about this, let the experts help!  Hire a good moving company to do the packing for you.

crushed moving box

LABEL EVERYTHING - DONT MIX ROOMS

To make your life easier when you move in, don’t fill up a box with random items from different rooms, keep rooms, and their boxes, separate.  This will ensure a smoother move-in, and will make things easier to find!  Nothing is worse than when you’re looking for something specific and it is lost in a sea of boxes, can you say, anxiety?  Reduce the stress and plan ahead!

We hope this helped, and as always, should you ne in the market for a reliable moving company, look no further than Brookline Moving Company!
